Backstroke leg of IM?

I'm actually a pretty decent backstroker, for the events when it is just backstroke. But whenever I swim the 200/400 IM, I get out ahead on the fly and then when I can't see anyone on the backstroke I lose my drive and start cruising, only to find myself way behind and having to catch up. I don't have this problem as much in the plain backstroke events, although it is still there since I tend to pace a lot off of the people around me, and I can't really see them in backstroke. Any suggestions?Backstroke leg of IM?
i have a 1:03 in my backstroke and i'm 13, and i also used to have trouble on IM

u really want to be able to kind of see people in backstroke, which also depends how good ur peripheral vision is, and if ur goggles allow u to see that way, so u might need to get new goggles (i prefer mirrored Speedo Vanquishers, so i can see in the sun). if ur goggles fog up i would not recommend anti fog spray, it never worked for me. instead i always spit in them and then put them in the water, and it really worked!

when u swim fly, try to be in the front of the game, but don't go all out, so u'll save some energy for the backstroke.

once ur on backstroke, make sure that u BREATH a lot, so that u get a lot of oxygen in ur muscles, and it makes u go faster, and make sure to try really hard, no cruising.

trust me, u don't want to fall behind on backstroke, because most breaststrokers catch up a lot on breast stroke, and u don't want that!

good luck!
Try not taking it out so fast in the butterfly when you do IM. After you finish the butterfly try keeping high tempo and constant rhythm. I know that you are probably tired from the butterfly and that is normal. A good race is supposed to burn and hurt very bad. Also if you have trouble seeing in you goggles make sure that you are not using mirrored goggles when inside. Also try anti-fog spray or simply spit in you goggles before you race. It sounds gross but if you spit and rub in around the lens and shake out extra saliva you'll find it works great. Good luck!Backstroke leg of IM?
The backstroke part for me is definetly my hardest part of IM. What I do is try to swim fly easier, because I know others have this same problem for back, so I easily catch up on it, then own 'em in breastroke. Works all the time. You just need to make sure your freestyle is 100% effort.
I to have the same problem in 200m IM whenever I join our regional try-out

I always touch first on butterfly leg then suddenly when I turn into the breastroke leg I noticed that my opponent were ahead me

I suggest you double your effort in the backtroke whenever your training add atleast half hour on your training to train only for backstroke

I also suggest you that don't look on your opponent think like this "the only one who I'am competing with is myself my only best time every time I will compete I need to break my own record"
