Stay on The Strip or Downtown in Las Vegas?

My husband and I are planning a trip to Vegas/Grand Canyon area in April 2010. I have looked for hotels on the strip but I can't seem to find a reasonably priced hotel that gets good reviews. I have looked at Luxor and Stratosphere. I found the Golden Nugget which is located downtown which seems to be reasonably priced and well reviewed. We are planning to rent a car for the whole week so we wouldn't have to get a taxi, public transportation, etc. My question is, are we going to be annoyed when we have to drive to the strip each time? If so, can someone give me some good places to stay on the strip that are reasonably priced? Thank you!Stay on The Strip or Downtown in Las Vegas?
If your renting a car ( which is a GREAT idea!!!!) then stay down town. Rooms are cheaper %26amp; how much time do you really spend in your room?? If you want to be on the strip then look at the Imperial Palace. It is located perfectly on the strip, right in the middle. I like the Golden Nugget. I have stayed there a few times %26amp; have been pleased with the stay every time ( before we moved here). I do not think you will be annoyed every time you have to drive to the strip it will take you 5 mins to drive down the street to get to the other casino's on the Strip. It is NOT far at all!! I have stayed at the N.Y N.Y casino %26amp; I did NOT like it there at all. I would NEVER stay there again. We had a dirty room, bad service %26amp; took 2 hours to get more pillows.
Downtown is definitely cheaper than the Strip, so if you want to save some money for gambling or other activities you might want to consider staying on Fremont Street. I've stayed at the Plaza and Binion's (the latter of which no longer has its hotel operating), and found both to be decent for the price. If you're going to stay on the Strip, I wouldn't stay at the Stratosphere (actually, I wouldn't suggest staying north of Encore). I'd recommend Imperial Palace, Flamingo or Harrah's as they are nice inexpensive hotels that are centrally located. Hope that helps!Stay on The Strip or Downtown in Las Vegas?
I would stay on the strip where the action is and. If you stay on the Blvd. you are close to everything, like other hotels, night clubs and bars. In order to get the best price book directly with your desired hotel. In addition you can use a promotion code in order to lower the nightly room price. You can find on http://www.vegas-hotels-online.com the latest promotion codes.
Down town is great and just a short distance to the strip, so no you won't have enough time to get annoyed. Down town is closed to traffic and there are not druggies and prostitutes all over the place it has quite a bit of security. My family loves downtown when they come to visit.
The two most inexpensive hotels on the strip are the Imperial Palace and Casino Royale. Both are centrally located and only a short walk from Harrah's, the Flamingo, Venetian and others.

Harrah's the Flamingo and the Mirage are quite reasonably priced and are all mid strip. Traffic on the strip will be your biggest headache, but that fact that you can valet park just about any where for the price of a tip makes up for it.
Stay on the strip and save money on transportation. To get good deals on Strip hotels, book directly from the hotels using their discount promo codes to get the maximum discounts. Here are a few codes.

i recently stayed in downtown vegas first time, i recommmend that over

the strip. i got a great deal at El Cortez. bus passes, you can get a

3 days for 15.00. el cortez rated 4 out of 5 and 85% of people

are happy there.
omg.. downtown.. (other end of the strip) is horrible... tons of druggies and prostitutes. crack houses..... and soo on
The New York New York is a great hotel, although the reviews aren't amazing ( only 80 percent of the people would go there again) it is so fun. It is located on the strip and when your in Las Vegas you have taxi's at your service. The taxi's are all lined up outside the hotel and you just hop into on and your off. Mostly everything in Las Vegas are within walking distance. And the New York New York is located on the strip. Las Vegas has many attractions such as the New York New York arcade for kids, the MGM Grand has a FREE lion habitat, M%26amp;M world is free and is right across the street from New York New York and the new york new york is overall a great hotel and is reasonably pricesd
I've been going to Vegas for decades and have mostly settled on staying at Strip hotels. But the right answer depends on what you are expecting out of the trip and what kind of experience you are looking for.

When I was younger and enjoyed gambling more, I used to stay downtown. Better odds on some games and lower minimums than the Strip.

Nowadays I don't get that much of a kick out of gambling and I look to enjoy the shows and the glitz of the Strip. It is also where almost most of the attractions are. Not to say that downtown isn't worth going to, but generally it's much less classy than the Strip. Downtown is an easy drive from the strip and there is plenty of parking. Note that you don't want to try and drive on the Strip at night. It's the worst gridlock you've ever seen. Well, you might want to do it just once to see all the lights and glitz.

Here's what I would recommend. Find a place on the Strip that you feel you can afford. If price is a big factor, someone mentioned Harrahs and Flamingo -- I would second that. Those casinos are located centrally which is awfully convenient (see http://www.lasvegasmaps.com/stripmap.htm鈥?/a> ). Traveling between places is done by getting a good map of Vegas and figuring out the side roads that allow you to avoid actually going more than a block or two on the Strip itself. Of course there are taxis and the monorail, but I find I can maneuver by car pretty well doing the above. And of course all the strip hotels have good parking at no cost except for the standard $2 valet tip.
Of all the downtown hotels, the Golden Nugget is the best. The rooms are surprisingly clean and comfortable. Even the views can be cool.

But if I were coming to Vegas on vacation, I would definitely avoid the cheaper strip hotels in favor of the all suite hotels, or a nice room downtown. Luxor is a nice hotel, but a little overpriced for what you get. Stratosphere is not so good. Excalibur is cheap but there are too many kids running around. Same with Circus Circus. Mirage is a better bet.

Maybe you should consider getting a nice suite during the week on the strip (Venetian/Palazzo is nice, so are Wynn, Belagio and Mandalay Bay), and then a smaller room downtown (or even several blocks away from the touristy stuff) for the weekend.
Downtown is much better than the strip. On the strip, all the hotels are a 1/2 mile away from each other(give or take), all you seem to do it walk from one to the other. Downtown, the hotels are closer together, easier to go from one to the other. Fitzgerald's is a nicer, older hotel with reasonable rates. The Golden Nugget, the Plaza and the Four Queens are also nice hotels downtown. Getting to the strip from downtown is easy, just follow Las Vegas Blvd and you are there, or buy an all day pass for the double decker buses they have ($5 for all day) and let them take you where you need to go. If you are going to rent a car, also rent a Garmin or other GPS device, believe me, it makes life MUCH easier when you are on vacation.
