I am a student working on my bachelors in nursing. Periodically we (the students) have to teach parts of the class with a Powerpoint presentation. I have great PowerPoints but I lose all brain function when I begin to try and teach my peers. The last presentation given could have been recorded as the ultimate what not to do when giving a presentation. I was lost in my slides, the computer wouldn't cooperate, and I thought I would at least be able to wing it from practicing a couple of times. But NOOOOO, I felt like I was having an out of body experience and was unable to help my person perform. Just thought some special person out there could give me a couple of golden nuggets to help me convey the information in a professional and interesting way. This is not the first presentation given this semester, but I only have one left and I would like to do much better. I think part of my problem is that I try to cover too much information instead of just key ideas, what do you think?HELP! Would like to give a great oral presentation but go blank when speaking in front of peers, suggestions?
One suggestion:
Start the presentation off my focusing on one member of the audience who you know will give you positive feedback through her body language and/or facial expressions.
That positive reaction should calm you down and allow you to feel that you and she are having a one on one discussion.
Then, after a few slides, switch your attention to someone else in the audience. Hopefully, you will garner the same feeling as you had with your first contact.
After you get into the heart of the presentation, you should be able to begin to focus on the entire audience with confidence and style.
