Hi everyone. I'm from Melbourne, Australia and next year I'm planning to be in Hong Kong from mid Feb to mid May, then travel back home via Vietnam and Thailand. I'm using websites to compare prices and I'm finding that 'multi stop' tickets (e.g. 'Melb, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Phuket, Melb') are VERY expensive. Should I just get a one-way from Melb to HK and buy the other legs later? Help! Thanks! What's the best way to go about cheap international flights?
Sure, as long as each place will let you enter on a one-way ticket without showing proof of onward travel. Many places won't. You can check that here: http://www.delta.com/planning_reservatio鈥?/a>
Are you aware of Tiger Air, Jetstar, and other low-cost airlines? Here: http://www.discountairfares.com/lcostaus鈥?/a> It might be cheaper to book your own one-way flights with these, and use your printed e-ticket receipt as "proof of onward travel" when entering each country.
The big airline search sites usually don't cover these new low-cost airlines. However, it wouldn't hurt to try your itinerary with these multi-stop searches:

I suggest buying roundtrip to Bangkok or Phuket from Oz and getting a cheap Air Asia or Bangkok Airways flights from Bangkok to China or whereever you want to go in SEA.

Many travellers base themselves in Bangkok and take advantage of the fact that Bangkok is SE Asia's hub for budget flights. What's the best way to go about cheap international flights?

ask a any travel agent is the best....
Keep a close eye on the websites for specials. You can often catch a special for tickets in advance that won't be available but for a few days to purchase. When these pop up, grab them.
Get a good travel agent in your area for advice. Enjoy your trip.
