Alcatraz IslandWhere do you take your kids on vacation?
I think these are all really great educational and fun vacations for older kids.
We took our kids to many of these, but if you ask them they will tell you their favorite vacation is always St Pete Beach in Florida - why?
Because we stay in a very small, family owned resort that offers not only the beach and ocean, but tennis courts, basketball courts, grills, a pool, hot tubs, game room, beach volley ball, and fast food across the street. It's a great all in one place with plenty of other families and we just stay put and enjoy each other more than when we're on a tight schedule of tours and exploration. The other places are probably more educational than a beach vacation, but we would spend so much time taking tours and staying on a schedule that it's exhausting for them and we find little time to reconnect as a family. We found that one day of tours and then a day just kicked back by a hotel pool makes those types of vacations a lot easier on the kids and really better for our family.
I have visited the national mall and niagara falls from that list. I visited both on the same trip. Both of those are fun. I don't think that niagara falls is very kid friendly. The falls is really the only attraction and it could possibly be dangerous for a child as there are massive cliffs everywhere. I think the national mall is great for kids(and adults) The kids that would get the most out of a trip to DC would be kids that are 10 and up. There is a lot to do there and a lot to see.Where do you take your kids on vacation?
Well, I've been to Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and the National Mall, but my son hasn't been to any of these places. But he's only 5, so it's a safe bet that none of these would hold his interest for more than a few minutes and some of them might be not be safe for a child too young to understand the dangers of say, leaning over a cliff to get a better look, or running off of the marked path.
When I was in Yellowstone, I bought a book called 'Deaths in Yellowstone' which held, you guessed it, accounts of crazy deaths in the park, including some where people wandered off the main trails and fell through thin crust and burnt to death in the hot springs...
I'd say for an older child, maybe 10 or so, the outdoorsy places would be good, and for maybe a 12 year old the historical places. Boys will likely be more interested in Alcatraz while girls might be more into say, the National Mall.
All of these places are pretty far from me though. Our 'vacations' are usually camping somewhere nearby, though we do like to go to the beach when we can. Every few years or so.
My kids have never been to any of those places. When we go on vacation, it is usually to Mackinac Island or somewhere in the U.P. of Michigan.
