How to travel by boat without the cruise?

I heard that to save money people will travel in boats with the crew on the boat. I think cargo boats. Is this true? I have a fear of planes but never have enough money to afford a boat cruise. I live in Canada and am thinking about taking a vacation in England. I'm not interested in boat cruises. Only the destination really. My mom told me about the boat idea lol. She said you pay and you have to eat with the crew members on the ship when they eat or something...it sounds a bit funny.

I just want to know, do people really do that?

Is it legal?

How much does it cost?

How do I get on board? Do I book it or just show up?

Thanks.

Also, I went on a 2 hour flight before and didn't do to well up there. How to travel by boat without the cruise?
First of all, they're not boats. They're ships.

Secondly, what you want to do is be a passenger on a freighter. Here are some websites to look at:

You are not going to save much. The average price is going to be around $100 a day per person double occupancy. There is no exact sailing time and arrival time like a cruise ship. No shows, gambling, escorted tours, shops, etc. It is just a different experience and is not done to save money.?

See page below for several articles with the information you want.
Yes, there are staterooms available on freighters. Any travel agent would be able to assist you.
